Comic Relief

Comic Relief.

Freemasons donate £110,000 to support Caribbean relief efforts

Posted: 2nd November 2017

A series of grants totalling £110,000 have been donated to support ongoing relief efforts on islands across the Caribbean, hit hard by this summer’s hurricanes.

The largest grant, of £50,000, will support Plan International UK’s work in Haiti and the Dominican Republic

More than a million people in these countries are still badly affected by the hurricane and are in urgent need of help.

Despite major coverage of the recent hurricanes, the crisis in Haiti and the Dominican Republic has been largely ignored by the media. Haiti in particular has tens of thousands of people still living in makeshift shelters following the devastating earthquake of 2010, the cholera outbreak which followed, and the widespread destruction caused by Hurricane Matthew last year.

The grant to Plan International UK will provide food and kitchen kits, clean water supplies, mattresses and bedding and hygiene kits specifically aimed at women and children. There will also be aid to help farmers restore their livelihoods and replacement school items to help children resume their education as soon as possible.

Tanya Barron, Chief Executive of Plan International UK said:

The media may have moved on but rebuilding takes time. People are struggling to piece their lives back together after the latest in a series of disasters which have devastated these countries. We are hugely grateful to the Masonic Charitable Foundation for their generous grant, which will make a big difference to thousands of people across Haiti and the Dominican Republic

Caribbean Masonic Districts receive £60,000

Three further grants totalling £60,000 have been awarded to the Masonic Districts of Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean, Bahamas & Turks as well as Trinidad and Tobago, to help people in these areas following Hurricanes Irma and Maria.  The emergency relief grants will help those living without access to safe shelter, food, drinking water and sanitation.

David Innes, Chief Executive of the Masonic Charitable Foundation, said:

The recent hurricanes in the Caribbean have left many thousands of people at risk of malnutrition and disease, some of whom have been largely forgotten.

I am very pleased we are able to help with Plan International UK’s long-term, life-saving work as well as working directly with the overseas Masonic Districts to assist those in need.

Freemasons support Millom flood relief

Posted: 9th October 2017

A joint donation of £8,000 has been been awarded to help victims of the recent flooding in Millom and Haverigg. £5,000 of this funding comes from the Masonic Charitable Foundation, while the remaining £3,000 comes directly from the Provincial Grand Lodge of Cumberland and Westmorland.

Last weekend’s heavy rain resulted in an estimated three hundred homes being flooded. Many of these properties have no insurance as a result of being flooded on previous occasions.

The Provincial Grand Master of Cumberland and Westmorland Freemasons, Norman Thompson, announced the grant during a meeting with the Mayor of Millom, Councillor Angela Dixon.

Councillor Angela Dixon, Mayor of Millom, said:

I’m very grateful to Cumberland and Westmorland Freemasons for their generous grant. The recent flooding in Millom and Haverigg hit us very hard and we need all the help we can get to get back on our feet.

Norman J Thompson DL, Provincial Grand Master of Cumberland and Westmorland Freemasons said:

“Having your home flooded is a terrible blow for anyone. In this case it’s even worse as these are homes that have flooded before and for which insurance was often unobtainable. I am pleased that we can offer a little help to our neighbours in Millom when they need it.”

Digital round-up: CBM launches app to help disabled people access life-saving disaster relief

Overseas disability charity CBM will launch the full version of its Humanitarian Hands-on Tool on Saturday to coincide with World Humanitarian Day.

The app, which is designed to provide help for people with disabilities seek life-saving relief services during emergencies, was unveiled in prototype version last year, since when CBM has consulted with humanitarian and disabled people’s organisations and incorporated their feedback.

HHOT aims to provide practical, step-by-step guidance that emergency workers can access freely and easily to ensure that the help they provide, such as emergency shelters or food and water points are accessible to people with disabilities or other marginalised groups.

Zoe Hopkins, senior programme officer at humanitarian aid agency Mercy Corps, who took part in the consultation sessions, said it was important to adapt common emergency responses to be more disability inclusive.

“Interactive use of the HHOT tool revealed many practical ways of adapting all sectors of emergencies, from quick wins such as appropriate signage in a camp, to more participatory approaches of ensuring disabled people’s organisations are present at Cluster meetings,” she said.

Breast Cancer Care has created a video to celebrate 25 years of the pink ribbon, the global symbol for breast cancer.

The Pink Ribbon 25 anniversary film, which also features the charity’s new limited edition pink velvet ribbon, has been launched across Breast Cancer Care’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram channels. It features 25 people who have been affected by breast cancer in some way whether that is through facing their own cancer diagnosis or supporting someone else.

Samia al Qadhi, chief executive of Breast Cancer Care, said: “Since the first pink ribbon was created we’ve helped millions of women, men, their friends and families live with, through and beyond breast cancer. This year, as we celebrate and mark its 25th anniversary, it remains as compelling as ever – a powerful symbol of hope, strength and unity.”

Private schools ‘will save £522m in business rates tax relief in next five years’

According to the business rates firm CVS, 586 of 1,038 private schools in England and Wales have charitable status and are therefore entitled to 80 per cent mandatory business rates tax relief

Charitable private schools will save £522m on business rates over the next five years because of their charitable status, according to new research.

The figures are based on requests to 132 councils made under the Freedom of Information Act by the business rates firm CVS, which found that 586 out of 1,038 private schools in England and Wales had charitable status and were therefore entitled to the 80 per cent mandatory business rates tax relief.

All charities are entitled to the 80 per cent relief from business rates, with a further 20 per cent available on a discretionary basis.

CVS also analysed government figures on private schools and found that 2,707 properties were classified as private schools.

These schools had a combined rateable value of £386.6m based on the last property assessment in 2010, but this has since risen by 19.6 per cent to £462.5m, CVS said.

CVS estimated that private schools could pay almost £1.2bn in business rates over the next five years if the business rates revaluation were to take place, but their charitable status meant that this figure would fall to £634.3m.

CVS also released the figures for some well-known private schools that will save substantial sums over the next five years because of the business rates exemption.

For example, Eton College, which was attended by the former Prime Minister David Cameron, will pay £821,040 in business rates over the next five years, but would face a bill of £4.1m over the same period if it were not a registered charity.

Dulwich College in south London, which was attended by the former Ukip leader Nigel Farage, will pay £786,752 in business rates over the next five years, compared with a potential tax bill of £3.9m if it did not have charitable status, according to CVS.

Waverley Borough Council in Surrey grants the highest amount of business rate relief to private schools, the research shows, with five London boroughs also making the top 10.
